What happens at four o'clock
At 4:00 PM Eastern, regular trading ends on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq: 4 PM ET is the closing bell. That's 1 PM in California and usually 9 PM in London, so if you're watching the close from elsewhere, count to your own local time.
In Britain, four o'clock is the traditional hour for afternoon tea. And for anyone on an eight-to-four shift, it's simply home time.
